The monarch butterfly was categorized by scientists last week as endangered. Populations of the iconic orange-and-black butterfly have plummeted over recent decades because of habitat loss, pesticides and herbicides, and climate change. What can home gardeners do to help the monarch? The first thing is planting milkweed. It's the only plant on which monarchs lay eggs and which monarch caterpillars eat. Choose the right milkweed for your region. The National Wildlife Federation has an online database to help select plants native to your region. Adult monarchs need other kinds of plants too, specifically ones with nectar-bearing flowers. Avoid pesticides and herbicides, even ones labeled natural or organic. And consider setting up a butterfly puddling station with water and a warm rock.

Barcelona says it has reached an agreement to sign France defender Jules Koundé on a transfer from Sevilla. The 23-year-old center back is expected to sign a contract after completing a medical exam. Barcelona has not disclosed the length of the contract or the transfer fee it is paying Sevilla for the services of Koundé who had also drawn interest from Chelsea. He would Barcelona’s third major signing after it sold part of its television rights as it tries to both claw its way out of debt and rebuild a competitive team after winning nothing last season. Already this month it secured the transfers of striker Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich and winger Raphinha from Leeds.

One of the nation’s biggest lottery prizes has grown a little bigger as the Mega Millions jackpot increased to an estimated $1.1 billion. The increase on Thursday ahead of the next drawing on Friday night makes the jackpot the third largest, behind $1.5 billion prizes won in 2018 and 2016. Before rushing out to spend $2 on a ticket, keep in mind that the odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are a staggering 1 in 302.5 million. The $1.1 billion prize is for players who get their winnings through an annuity, paid annually over 29 years. Nearly all winners take the cash option, which for Friday’s drawing is an estimated $648.2 million.

A former Russian state TV journalist who quit after making an on-air protest of Russia’s war in Ukraine has been fined 50,000 rubles ($860) for discrediting the military. Marina Ovsyannikova was charged under a law that penalizes statements against the military. A conviction is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. The fine imposed Thursday was for her comment at a court where an opposition figure was remanded into custody pending trial. Online news outlet Meduza said Ovsyannikova called the invasion a “horrible crime.” She previously was fined 30,000 rubles ($270 at the time) for holding up an antiwar poster during an March 14 news broadcast on state Channel One.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison says he won’t appeal a ruling that struck down most of the state’s restrictions on abortion as unconstitutional. Ellison said Thursday that the state has already spent enough time and money on the case and would be unlikely to win an appeal. The decision wasn't a surprise from Ellison, a Democrat who supports abortion rights. Abortion opponents and Republicans, including those running against him in November, had demanded he appeal and called it his duty as attorney general. The ruling this month by a Ramsey County judge nullified several restrictions passed over the years, including a mandatory 24-hour waiting period and a requirement that both parents be notified before a minor can get an abortion.

Two documentaries detailing the punishing effects of Russia’s war on Ukraine will air on PBS’ “Frontline” investigative series. The specials are part of an extensive collaboration between the series and The Associated Press that includes gathering, verifying and cataloging potential war crimes and co-publishing stories and videos from AP and “Frontline” war reporting. “Putin’s Attack on Ukraine: Documenting War Crimes,” will describe the toll of previous Russian conflicts and the invasion of Ukraine. The second documentary, “20 Days in Mariupol,” will view Russia’s attack on the Ukrainian city through the work of AP video journalist Mstyslav Chernov. The films will air on the new “Frontline” season beginning in September.

Lebanese living near Beirut's port who survived a devastating explosion there two years ago are in fear for their lives again amid a smoldering fire in the port's massive grain silos that was destroyed in the blast. They say the stench of the rotting grains has been suffocating and they are daily reminded of their trauma since they can see the burning silos from their windows. Experts say the silo's collapse is inevitable and only a matter of time. The 2020 blast killed over 200 people and injured more then 6,000 others in the Lebanese capital. Many survivors believe the silos should stand as a memorial for the victims.

Juan Soto could be the biggest star dealt before the Major League Baseball trade deadline if the Washington Nationals choose to make that move. But he's not the player the team is most likely to trade before Tuesday afternoon. That would be veteran first baseman Josh Bell, who is in the midst of one of his best seasons. Bell is batting .304 with 13 home runs and could be an ideal rental acquisition for a contender in need of a solid bat just about anywhere in the lineup. The soon-to-be 30-year-old has also shown a knack for getting hits in important situations.

David Jakubonis faces a federal count of assaulting a member of Congress with a dangerous weapon for the attack July 21 in the Rochester area. The charge carries a potential maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. At a detention hearing Thursday, a prosecutor argued Jakubonis should be held as a danger to the community who lunged at a congressman with a dangerous weapon.

Since her breakthrough role as Vanessa in the film adaptation of “In The Heights,” Melissa Barrera has been working non-stop on the big and small screen. Starting Thursday, she can be seen in “Keep Breathing,” a Netflix miniseries about a woman battling the elements as the lone survivor of a plane crash in the middle of the Canadian wilderness. It’s a wide variety of roles for the Mexican-born Barrera, one of very few actresses defying what roles a Latina can play amidst the lack of representation discussion in Hollywood. She calls the series a “survival show about surviving your mind, surviving your insecurities, your childhood traumas.”

An ailing manatee that was found and rehabilitated in Texas late last year is now in Florida after being flown from Texas on a cargo plane. The manatee was released into a bay near a wildlife refuge along the Gulf Coast this week. The manatee named TexasTeeMiguel was released Wednesday into Kings Bay in Crystal River, Florida. Late last week, TexasTeeMiguel flew on a DHL Express cargo plane in a custom, state-of-the-art container built specifically for manatees. The Dallas Cowboys have signed receiver and kick returner KaVontae Turpin, the former TCU player who was kicked off the team in 2018 before pleading guilty to assaulting his girlfriend. Turpin is coming off an MVP season with the New Jersey Generals in the rebirth of the United States Football League. The 25-year-old led the league in receiving yards. Turpin was one of the best kick returners in the nation while at TCU. He was arrested after witnesses told police they saw Turpin drag his girlfriend across a parking lot as she resisted and screamed for them to call 911.

Aaron Rodgers says he expects the Green Bay Packers offense to face plenty of adversity during the preseason as it lines up against a defense that seems far more settled. The four-time MVP quarterback believes that could prove beneficial in the long run. Rodgers says that taking some lumps early is “going to build some character.” The two-time reigning MVP is in a much different situation than last year. He's smoothed over his relationship with team management and is dealing with a new group of receivers now that All-Pro wideout Davante Adams is with the Las Vegas Raiders.

A Wisconsin judge says that a Republican-ordered, taxpayer-funded investigation into the 2020 election found “absolutely no evidence of election fraud,” but did reveal contempt for the state’s open records law by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and a former state Supreme Court justice he hired. Dane County Circuit Judge Valerie Bailey-Rihn on Thursday awarded about $98,000 in attorneys’ fees to the liberal watchdog group American Oversight, bringing an end in circuit court to one of four lawsuits the group filed. Vos’s attorney says he'll recommend that Vos appeal the ruling. Vos ordered the probe last year under pressure from Donald Trump, who lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden in battleground Wisconsin by nearly 21,000 votes.

A senior Ethiopian official says the government is ready for talks with rival forces from the country’s northern Tigray region “anytime, anywhere” and without preconditions, in a notable break from the past. The announcement by the security adviser to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came amid hopes for dialogue to resolve the East African nation’s deadly war that erupted in November 2020. The announcement came after a meeting with special envoys from the United Nations, the European Union and the United States. Movement toward talks has come after a cease-fire and the increasing delivery of desperately needed aid to long-blockaded Tigray.

A judge has ordered no release for a man accused of raping and impregnating a 9-year-old Ohio girl who traveled to Indiana for an abortion. The judge in Columbus cited overwhelming evidence Thursday and the fact that Gerson Fuentes is apparently living in the United States illegally. The case has become a flashpoint in the national discussion over abortion access since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Fuentes has pleaded not guilty. His attorney says there was no evidence of physical abuse outside of the rapes or that the girl had been put under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Opposition lawmakers in Nigeria have threatened to impeach the country’s president Muhammadu Buhari over accusations he has failed to implement recommendations to stem rising violence in the West African nation just as Nigeria's National Security Council announced plans for a new strategy to end the violence. After a six-month impeachment notice issued to the president by the opposition in the Nigerian Senate, their counterparts in the House of Representatives said they would follow suit. Buhari also met with Nigeria's security chiefs to discuss new strategies.

In “Hold on Baby,” King Princess’ second album, there’s something emotionally relatable for all her listeners. Mikaela Straus, the 23-year-old musician behind King Princess, had a viral breakout hit with “1950,” which has over 20 million views on YouTube. She released her debut album, “Cheap Queen,” which proved the artist wasn’t afraid to be experimental with her sound. But unlike her debut, this new album is not just about heartbreak, says Associated Press reviewer Karena Phan. “Hold On Baby” is about trying to find that next epic love story and about self-acceptance.

He reiterated France's willingness to support educational and economic development projects as well as provide military backing for the region's fight against extremism.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has told fellow Senate Democrats they now have an opportunity to achieve two “hugely important” priorities on health care and climate change after the deal he struck with Sen. Joe Manchin. Schumer spoke Thursday during a closed-door meeting of Democrats. Manchin called the package a “win-win” at his own press briefing. An expansive agreement that had eluded them for months. The Senate is expected to vote on the wide-ranging measure next week, setting up President Joe Biden and Democrats in the runup to November congressional elections. Republicans are staunchly opposed.
