Without the Xbox, video games would have a very different landscape today. Modern conveniences such as Game Pass, cloud saves, and voice chat parties are easily taken for granted, but we’d have none of them now if it weren’t for the original Xbox. 

At times seen as the successor to Sega’s failed Dreamcast, the Xbox doubled down on the approach to online gameplay, and Microsoft bankrolled their new gaming division heavily enough to give the game a solid library of games you couldn’t play on any other console, in addition to a few PC ports that just wouldn’t work on other systems. 

In this list, we’ve put together ten of the best original Xbox games of all time, limiting ourselves to one per series. Many of these games are playable elsewhere or have been ported since, but if you can, give these a try on an Xbox Series S with backward compatibility, and you’ll have an amazing experience. If you read our best Dreamcast games list, then you’ll already know that the original SoulCalibur was a revelation. The only thing that managed to wrestle the original off of the 3D fighting game throne was the sequel, and what a sequel it was. The cast was expanded, the stages were more detailed, and we saw a refined and focused game, one that could be taken seriously in a competitive environment, with more nuance than ever before. Plus, the Xbox version included a playable Spawn .

One thing the Xbox excelled at was PC ports that just didn’t fit on other consoles, and Half-Life 2 was a perfect example of that. When this was released on PC it was groundbreaking, and only Xbox had enough in common with home computers to pull it off on consoles. A detailed physics system was factored into combat, puzzle-solving, and platforming. Pair that with a strong story, and you have all the hallmarks of a masterpiece. 

It was a close call between Halo 2 and the original, but the original Xbox did one thing better than any other console at the time: online multiplayer. For that reason alone, Halo 2 became a staple of multiplayer sessions, whether your friends were in the room with you or on the other side of the country. Halo 2 changed how all console players saw multiplayer shooters, and influenced the online ecosystem we have today. 

Again, have you seen our best Dreamcast games list? Then this needs no explanation. Jet Set Radio Future is Jet Set Radio , but bigger and better. It takes place in an alternate timeline, with an altered plot, new music, new characters, and much more. If you like Jet Set Radio , then you’ll love Jet Set Radio Future , obviously. 

Another PC port that seemed otherwise impossible, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is the progenitor of the Skyrim you know and love. There were Elder Scrolls games before this, but Morrowind is what cemented the gameplay and world design that has made Bethesda iconic since. If you’ve enjoyed a modern Fallout , Elder Scrolls , or are anticipating the upcoming Starfield , then you owe it to Morrowind . 

Metal Gear Solid 2 , but better. Substance was released on Xbox and PC in addition to the PS2, and added a lot of content, including around 500 new missions, some set in a VR environment, and others in areas from the main game but with new objectives. Plus, this version of the game was an Xbox exclusive for a few months after release. 

Fable was one of the best action RPGs on the platform, and impacted fans enough for them to still clamor for a new entry even today. Fable ‘s incredibly British and lighthearted world cemented a tone unlike any other for an RPG, and the story of the Hero of Oakvale growing up to fight Jack of Blades is still a simple but iconic Xbox gem. 

We’ve never been closer to realizing the dream of a Star Wars RPG with player choice than we have with Knights of the Old Republic . Another PC release that managed to find a home and legion of fans on Xbox consoles, Knights of the Old Republic can be considered to be one of the best Star Wars games of all time, and is a progenitor to the Mass Effect series. 

Racing cars is fun, but do you know what’s even better? Crashing them. Yes, Burnout is a fun, arcade-style racing game, but the real highlight of the third entry was the domino effect car crashes. The goal is to create as much damage as possible by using a single car as the inciting incident: smash a truck onto a crossroad and watch the madness pile up. 

Another BioWare title, Jade Empire might be the studio’s most underappreciated game. Building on Knights of the Old Republic , Jade Empire took players through a Chinese-inspired world. The combat was all action, while RPG staples still remained. Many players said this was the best RPG on Xbox, and it’s still the only console you can play Jade Empire on today. Consider giving this a go with Xbox Series X backward compatibility.
