ATLANTA — Atlanta native and Lovett School graduate Charlotte Laws is a tenacious bulldog when she latches onto something. So when a man hacked her daughter Kayla’s email account, stole nude photos of her and posted them on a revenge porn website, Laws was apoplectic.

Not only did Laws eventually get Kayla’s photo off the web, she would take down the unrepentant Hunter Moore, who ran the revenge porn site, with help from the FBI, anti-bullying advocate James McGibney and Anonymous, a group of Robin Hood-style hackers. The story is chronicled in a new Netflix true-crime docuseries that came out last week “The Most Hated Man on the Internet.”

President Joe Biden on Tuesday touted $52 billion in funding for domestic semiconductor chip production during a remote appearance at the Hemlock Semiconductor Corp. outside of Saginaw, Michigan.

The Baltimore Orioles acquired outfielder Brett Phillips from the Tampa Bay Rays for $100,000. The 28-year-old Phillips hit .147 in 75 games for the Rays this year, but he could bring defensive value to a Baltimore team that is still in the hunt for a postseason spot. The Orioles, who have spent several seasons rebuilding but are unexpectedly contending now, dealt fan favorite Trey Mancini to Houston and reliever Jorge López to Minnesota before Tuesday’s deadline. Phillips arrives with a .190 average in 347 big league games. The Rays designated him for assignment Monday. He grew up in Seminole, Florida, and was a Rays fan.

Saints second-year receiver Kawaan Baker is facing a six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy. A statement from the NFL on Tuesday says Baker is eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games. He'll be allowed to return to the Saints’ active roster on Oct. 17, following New Orleans' Week 6 home game against Cincinnati. Baker played in college for South Alabama and was New Orleans’ seventh-round draft choice in 2021. He spent the bulk of his first NFL season on the Saints’ practice squad.

The wife of a U.S. defense contractor, who together are charged in Hawaii federal court with stealing the identities of two deceased Texas infants and living under their names for three decades, says she's not the person prosecutors say she is. The woman charged as Gwynn Darle Morrison asserted Tuesday in a Honolulu court hearing that she's actually Julie Lyn Montague. Prosecutors say Montague died in 1968 at three weeks old and later had her identity stolen. The woman charged as Morrison and her husband, Walter Glenn Primrose, pleaded not guilty. They were held without bail.

The contentious race for the job of top prosecutor in Tennessee’s most populous county ends Thursday. That's when voters will decide between the current Republican district attorney and a Democratic challenger in a contest that’s gained some national attention and features clashing views on a new state sentencing law and prosecuting abortion providers. Voters will cast ballots in primary elections for governor, Congress and state legislative seats. Some counties will also have district attorney races. One prominent race takes place in Shelby County. The county’s sitting district attorney, Amy Weirich, faces opponent Steve Mulroy. The candidates have different approaches to some criminal justice issues.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Coronavirus activity is gradually declining in California after having surged from about the beginning of April through mid-July, state health data show.

The Yankees acquired Gold Glove-winning center fielder Harrison Bader from the St. Louis Cardinals for left-hander Jordan Montgomery ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline, a surprising deal aimed at improving defense. A speedy 28-year-old from Bronxville, New York, Bader has not played since June 26 because of plantar fasciitis in his right foot. When he returns, he likely would play center field in a move that would put Aaron Judge back in right and see Aaron Hicks in left, with Giancarlo Stanton as the designated hitter. Montgomery was 3-3 with a 3.69 ERA in 21 starts. His departure came one day after Frankie Montas was acquired from Oakland to join Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes and Jameson Taillon in the rotation.

Motocross and Supercross are combining for a world championship with a $10 million purse. Feld Motor Sports and MX Sports Pro Racing announced the creation of the SuperMotocross World Championship for the 2023 professional racing season. Motocross and supercross will continue to crown individual champions at the end of their respective series, but the top 22 riders in the 450cc and 250cc classes will qualify for the SuperMotocross World Championship. Points from the two series will be combined to make up the SuperMotocross playoff rounds and world championship round Oct. 14, 2023, at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The $10 million purse will be the richest in the sport’s history.

Idaho officials say climate change could make it more challenging to conserve and manage the state’s most at-risk fish, wildlife and plants. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game on Monday released its draft Idaho State Wildlife Action Plan that will guide its management actions for the next decade. The plan emphasizes preventing Endangered Species Act listings to maintain the state’s authority in plant and wildlife management decisions. The agency is taking public comments through Aug. 31 on the draft plan that will replace a 2015 version. The 336-page plan for the first time includes plants as well as an entire section on climate change.

The U.S. Justice Department says it is seeking possession of a Venezuelan cargo jet that has been grounded in Argentina since early June because it was previously owned by an Iranian airline that allegedly has ties to terror groups. The request to Argentina on Tuesday came a day after an Argentine judge allowed 12 of the 19 crewmembers of the plane to leave the country as authorities continue to investigate possible terror ties of those traveling in the Boeing 747. The remaining four Iranians and three Venezuelans are required to stay in Argentina. The case has raised attention in several South American countries amid allegations t\the plane was a cover for Iranian intelligence operations in the region. Iran and Venezuela vehemently deny those claims.

Cleveland Browns backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett has temporarily moved into the starting spot following Deshaun Watson's six-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. Brissett also started for New England, Indianapolis and Miami, which all had him in a backup role before he was forced to start due to suspensions, injuries or in the Colts' case, Andrew Luck's retirement in 2019. The 29-year-old Brissett's ability to jump in in a pinch is one of the reasons Cleveland signed him a day after trading for Watson.

The Milwaukee Brewers continued to reshape their bullpen following the departure of four-time All-Star closer Josh Hader by acquiring injured reliever Trevor Rosenthal from the San Francisco Giants just before Tuesday’s trade deadline. Milwaukee sent minor league outfielder Tristan Peters to the Giants. The Brewers announced the trade before starting a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Rosenthal hasn’t pitched since 2020 due to a variety of injuries but is hoping to make it back later this season. When Rosenthal signed a $4.5 million, one-year deal with San Francisco on July 21, Giants manager Gabe Kapler said the right-hander was several weeks away from being ready.

A Mississippi man says his pet cat helped prevent a robbery at his home. The calico cat named Bandit lives near Tupelo with her 68-year-old retired owner Fred Everitt. The cat alerted him when at least two people tried to break into their home. Bandit meowed and clawed at Everitt's arms to wake him. Everitt got up to investigate and saw two young men outside the back door. He says one had a handgun, and the other was using a crowbar to try and pry the door open. The would-be robbers fled. Everitt credits the cat with possibly saving his life.

A person with knowledge of the diagnosis tells The Associated Press that Denver Broncos wide receiver Tim Patrick has torn his right ACL. Patrick was taken for an MRI after he injured his right knee during training camp. The fourth-year veteran made a leaping catch on a ball thrown by quarterback Russell Wilson. Patrick’s right knee buckled and he fell to the ground as he made his first move to run after the catch. Running back Damarea Crockett tweeted that he tore his ACL in practice, as well. Both injuries were non-contact.

The King County Medical Examiner’s office in Seattle has that there were six heat-related deaths during the heat wave that enveloped the Pacific Northwest last week. The Seattle Times reports three people — ages 64, 65 and 77 — died from hyperthermia between July 27 and 30, including one probable case, and three people — ages 22, 23 and 67 — died from accidental drownings. The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for the Puget Sound region from July 26-31, and Seattle set a new record with six straight days of high temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. In Oregon, the state medical examiner’s office said it's investigating 14 deaths as possibly heat-related.

A political consultant who is accused of helping put a “ghost candidate” on a ballot to siphon off votes from the Democratic candidate in a state Senate race in central Florida has pleaded not guilty to election finance-related charges during his first court appearance. James “Eric” Foglesong entered the plea Tuesday during an arraignment hearing at the Seminole County Courthouse. Last May, prosecutors filed charges against Foglesong; the candidate, Jestine Iannotti; and Seminole County GOP chairman Ben Paris. According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Iannotti illegally accepted a $1,200 cash donation from Foglesong for her campaign.

Officials say one of the nation’s largest rent-to-own companies will pay $15.5 million to settle California’s allegations that it misled and overcharged tens of thousands of customers. Attorney General Rob Bonta said Tuesday that an investigation of the Rent-A-Center's kiosk business in retail stores found that since 2014 it used an inflated cash price for products that was 15% higher than the true retail price, among other alleged violations. The company will return $13.5 million in the form of restitution to California consumers under the settlement. Rent-A-Center did not immediately respond to requests seeking comment. The company did not admit any violations.

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to prohibit homeless people from setting up tents within 500 feet of schools and day care centers, during a raucous meeting where protesters shouted down council members and, at one point, halted the meeting.

CHICAGO — The racketeering case against former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan and his longtime confidant will likely not see any significant court action until next year after a judge Tuesday granted the defense a lengthy extension to review the massive pile of evidence turned over b…

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi flew into Taiwan on an Air Force passenger jet Tuesday, becoming the highest-ranking American official in 25 years to visit the self-ruled island claimed by China. But even as Pelosi was greeted by Taiwanese officials on the tarmac and headed to her hotel, China announced that it would conduct military maneuvers in retaliation for her presence. Her visit has ratcheted up tension between China and the United States. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, and it views visits by foreign government officials as recognition of the island’s sovereignty. President Joe Biden, in turn, has sought to calm China’s outrage, insisting there’s no change in longstanding U.S. policy toward Taiwan and China.

Baltimore's state's attorney's office says a grand jury has indicted a 15-year-old boy accused in the fatal shooting of a motorist who confronted the teen and others cleaning windshields for cash at a downtown intersection. News outlets report that the teen is charged with first-degree murder and other offenses in the death of Timothy Reynolds after the confrontation near the city’s Inner Harbor on July 7. The teen was arrested last month and charged with first-degree murder as an adult. The teen’s attorneys have said they hope to move the case to juvenile court. Attorney Warren Brown says his client had no juvenile record.

A political action committee chaired by former U.S. Rep. Tim Huelskamp spent more than $26,000 on Alliance Forge, the Republican-linked tech firm that leased the phone numbers used to send misleading text messages advocating for an amendment stripping abortion rights from the Kansas Constitution.

WASHINGTON — The endless speculation and theorizing can finally come to an end. On Tuesday, just hours before the trade deadline, the Mets sent third baseman/DH J.D. Davis and three prospects to the San Francisco Giants.

MIAMI — U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio is urging the FBI to open an “immediate” investigation into a U.S. anti-embargo group whose members recently met Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel, claiming that they are acting as unregistered foreign agents of the Cuban government.

When Brian Daboll was hired to be the New York Giants coach, there were hopes his offensive wizardy would rub off on Daniel Jones and make him a better quarterback. In four seasons as the Buffalo Bills’ offensive coordinator, Daboll did a masterful job of transforming Josh Allen from a No. 7 overall pick into one of the NFL’s top signalcallers. Jones needs help. He's posted a 12-25 record as a starter in three seasons. His biggest problem has been playing on bad teams. A week into training camp camp, Jones has shown flashes but he remains inconsistent.

New Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel has taken significant steps to help create bonds on a team with many new pieces. The transfer from Central Florida was busy last month. He got his offensive playmakers together at a ranch and took his offensive linemen to Lake Thunderbird. The efforts were needed because the Sooners have a new coaching staff and some of the team's most experienced players have come via the transfer portal. All that effort was made to create stability as the Sooners prepare for the opener against Texas-El Paso on Sept. 3.

The Biden administration has approved two massive arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to help them defend against Iran. The more than $5 billion in missile defense and related sales follow President Joe Biden's visit to the Middle East last month, during which he met with numerous regional leaders in Saudi Arabia. Although Tuesday's approvals are for defensive weapons, they may be questioned by lawmakers who had supported Biden's decision last year to cut Saudi Arabia and the UAE off from major purchases of offensive U.S. arms because of their involvement in the war in Yemen. The new sales include $3 billion for Patriot missiles for Saudi Arabia and $2.2 billion for high-altitude missile defense for the UAE.

A prosecutor says the parents of a 6-year-old eastern Indiana boy who fatally shot his 5-year-old sister in their home each have been charged with four counts of neglect. Delaware County Prosecutor Eric Hoffman said Tuesday that 28-year-old Jacob Grayson of Muncie and his 27-year-old wife, Kimberly Grayson, were formally charged in Delaware Circuit Court. If convicted of the most serious charge, level one felony neglect of a dependent resulting in death, they could each face up to 40 years behind bars. First responders discovered the girl with a gunshot wound to her head on July 26 at the home in Muncie, 60 miles northeast of Indianapolis. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

If his father is correct, quarterback Beau Allen’s unexpected decision last week to transfer from the Kentucky football program may have taken root during UK’s 31-17 drubbing at Mississippi State last Oct 30.

The number of people living in America without health insurance coverage hit an all-time low of 8 percent this year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Tuesday.  The findings come days after Democrats hammered out a 725-page climate, health care and tax deal that would extend generous federal subsidies for people who buy private health insurance that are credited with driving down the number of uninsured Americans.  Democrats have proposed spending $64 billion to extend those price breaks for three more years.
